The end of Miners Creek Road at 11,200' is less than two
miles over a saddle from the head of La Garita Creek and one
of Fremont's camps.  It was raining, so I had to wait it out
and then was pretty wet when I hoofed it up and over the saddle.
This is Boot Hill, which Williams led them to believe was the
divide.  At the top they saw Mesa Mtn to the west, which (again)
they thought was the divide.  They came over Boot Hill and down
to this place at the head of La Garita Creek.

I went to the most likely spot described by Richmond, spooking a herd of ~15 elk, and found this:

Poking around in the wet grass, with the afternoon running out, I found:


Is this a Fremont stump? I thought so at the time, but now I'd like to go back and investigate further--when it is dry and I have more time.

We camped down at the bottom of the Miners Creek Road at another hunter camp:
