I met my brother in Gunnison (since he lives in Lake City) and so
we entered the La Garitas from the north, over Carnero Pass (FR
416).  We took a spur up Lookout Mtn, which is so heavily timbered
that you can't really lookout:

What WAS interesting was that the whole place was covered with little ripe, red strawberries. Most strawberry plants in the Rocky Mtns are sterile, but there are places where you can find berries--usually about 1/4". There were lots here and I picked several handfuls for us to enjoy. At the base of Lookout Mtn, we found a hunter camp and set up for the night:
