High Desert Camping--Boulder, Colorado to Redwood City, California
October 10-23, 2001
Oct 10: I-70 to W side of San Rafael Swell. 23 degrees in the morning.
Oct 11: On to Delta, Utah, and then the fun begins. ~100 miles of
desert road to the Deep Creek Mtns to hike up Ibapah Pk
Oct12: Up Ibapah Pk, 12,087', 5000' elevation gain.
Oct 13: Desert roads wandering west, finally to Ely, Nevada. Shower!
On to ghost town of Hamilton. ~100 miles of backcountry
roads seeing no other person but lots of wild horses.
Oct 14: US 50 through Eureka, Austin, Fallon, Carson City, to S Lake Tahoe.
Big winnings. ;-)
Oct 15: Over the Sierras, off to Coloma--site of Jim Marshall's 1848
gold discovery. Then down California 49 to Angels Camp
and a warm, sunny resevoir campground.
Oct 16: To Redwood City
Oct 17: Tour to Pescadera, Half Moon Bay, Filoli mansion.
Oct 18: Tour to SF; dinner at Sam's--sand dabs(!)
Oct 19: California 120 past Sonoma to Coulterville.
Oct 20: Over Tioga Pass, past Mono Lake to Bishop, up White Mtns road
to Grandview campground.
Oct 21: Drive to end of road below Univ of Califonia Science Camp
(11,000') and 7.5 mile of hiking to White Mtn, 14,246'.
Oct 22: E through Deep Springs Valley, backroads of Nevada (Exterrestial
Highway) to Caliente, then Cedar City, Utah.
Oct 23: I-15 and I-70 to Boulder, 580 miles.
Total: 3300 miles
If you go: Buy the BLM quad maps (and Forest Service maps) of the
areas of Utah and Nevada. The Delorme atlas of Utah is OK, but the
Delorme atlas of Nevada is BAD. It shows roads that do not exist and
omits roads that do. I came upon an RV outting lost with only the
Delorme of Nevada; they saw my dust cloud and waiting for me to
arrive, hoping I knew where I was--er, had a good map.
