Monarch Crest
           September 10, 2007

	The Syncro Brothers--(again)

I invited Bob Stevens to meet me and ride the Monarch Crest bike
trail to celebrate our both turning 65. September 10th is Bob's
birthday; I was way older--by a week.

We met in Salida on 9/9. My daughter Kathryn drove in from
Glenwood Springs to ride with us. We all had dinner at
Laughing Ladies Restaurant in Salida, and then drove up the
Mt Shavano trailhead road to some great BLM camping--that's
Mt Shavano (14,229', 4337m) in the distance:

We left Monarch Pass at 8:40 on 9/10--cold, but clear and beautiful, when the forecast had been for rain. About three miles from the pass, this great shot of Kathryn and Bob at ~11,500':

Here Kathryn leads us--as she did for the whole ride:

Here's Bob coming along the high route:

Farther along, one of the hard climbs. Bob's in there somewhere:

After Marshall Pass, three miles in the trees:

Here are the two 65-year-olds at the point where the ride heads down Silver Creek. Mile 15 of 30:

Now you have to see Bob's pix of the trip: here and here

The next day (Tuesday), heading back to Boulder. Hog Heaven BBQ is closed on Tuesdays, so we stopped at Coney Island in Bailey-- just moved and refurbished from Conifer:

[Meanwhile, Bob broke down near Delta, Colorado. He didn't get home for a couple more days. His Syncro took another week to get to SLC. Now to get rid of that TIICO and put in a Subie--but that's another story....]

For more information (and photos) about the Monarch Crest trail, just google "monarch crest trail"--the site "MTB around Salida" at http://www.lowdin.nu/MTB/Colorado/MTB_around_Salida.html has great photos. It is the site that drew me to ride the trail in 2006--and crack a couple of ribs in a flip going down Silver Creek!
